On a visit to the US on Friday, national leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) George Simion said that he will not enter the presidential electoral race, adding that he supports Calin Georgescu's candidacy instead.

"I, George Simion, will not run in this presidential election. After the last two speeches of [US] Vice-President Vance, it is hard to believe that anyone will be able to remove Mr Calin Georgescu from the race, and supporting Mr Georgescu's candidacy it is a matter of honour, decency, that must be done,' said Simion, who took part in a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) as a special guest.

He said that on Saturday the 200,000 signatures needed by Calin Georgescu for his presidential bid in May will be already collected.

"I think that on Saturday we will already have the 200,000 signatures needed for another candidacy of Mr Calin Georgescu," said Simion.

The AUR leader added that on March 1 the "biggest" rally against the "illegitimate" Ciolacu Government will take place.

"On March 1, the largest possible rally will take place, an authorised one, an organised one, in the University - Victoriei Square area, because we want to bring down this illegitimate government, the Nordis Government. That must happen now, in order to ensure the equidistance of the voting process on May 4 and 18. That is why we will submit the motion of censure and, from petitions to rallies, we will use all forms of public and political pressure for Prime Minister Nordis to leave," Simion said.
