The "Avram Iancu" International Airport in Cluj-Napoca announces that it will build a photovoltaic park, through a project worth 54 million lei, from European funds.
"The Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport, an autonomous corporation under the County Council, was declared eligible by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure for the financing of a photovoltaic park from European money. Cluj Airport will build a photovoltaic park and energy storage capacities with non-refundable financing from the Modernization Fund for energy efficiency in the transport sector. (...) The total value of the project is over 54 million lei (VAT included) of which over 30 million lei will be from non-refundable European funds", according to a statement sent on Friday by the Cluj airport, agerpres reports.
According to the cited source, the objective of the project is to produce electricity by harnessing the renewable source represented by solar energy. Cluj Airport will install over 7500 photovoltaic panels on an area of 8 hectares, with an installed power of 5 MW and a storage capacity of 12 MW. Following the implementation of the project, over 60% of Cluj Airport's electricity consumption will be ensured from its own green energy production, which means a budget saving of approximately 1 million euros/year and an annual decrease in greenhouse gases of approximately 3400 tons of CO2.
"The implementation of the project will increase the airport's energy autonomy. We will invest in electricity production capacities from renewable sources, in energy storage systems, dedicated exclusively to self-consumption, and in the installation of heat pumps. Our goal is to reduce energy consumption from conventional sources, reduce CO2 emissions, and achieve energy autonomy," said the general director of Cluj Airport, David Ciceo, quoted in the press release.
