Bucharest residents will be able to observe migratory birds arriving from Greenland, the Scandinavian Peninsula or Siberia during an organised tour on Saturday by the Bucharest Natural Park Association and the Urban Nature Network.
The meeting will take place at 10:00 at the bridge where the Dambovita flows into Morii Lake, in the Chiajna area.
'For our northern guests, the unfrozen waters of Morii Lake are the equivalent of an exotic sunny holiday. Who are the stars? Straight from the much-disputed Greenland, as well as from the Scandinavian Peninsula and Siberia, Arctic loon (Gavia arctica) have landed. They are elegant, discreet and such skilled fishermen that they would make any angling enthusiast on the shore jealous. The best part? They do not stay hidden. They are so active that you can admire their aquatic gymnastics even without binoculars, but if you have them, bring them along to watch at high resolution. Besides the looms, we will also have the honour of meeting other permanent residents or winter tourists, as Morii Lake is a true international airport for winged visitors in the cold season,' the organisers said on Facebook.
The tour will be guided by Livia Gyongyosi. Layered clothing suitable for low temperatures is recommended. Those who have them may also bring binoculars and cameras.
'We will take a leisurely walk of about an hour and a half along the Dambovita floodplain towards Chiajna, one of the few areas in Bucharest that still looks like wild nature. Along the way, we will do a good deed for the birds and other animals by cleaning the riverbank of nets and plastic bottles abandoned by anglers who do not care very much. We will bring gloves and rubbish bags ourselves, so you will not be left empty-handed,' the Bucharest Natural Park Association and the Urban Nature Network said.
The Urban Nature Network also reiterated that feeding birds with bread is not recommended.
'Starting from the saying The road to hell is paved with good intentions,' we have found that during freezing days many kind-hearted people have tried to feed city birds with... bread. If you are in this situation, please stop doing it. We know you mean well, but birds' bodies do not process bread and bakery products, which contain salt, yeast, preservatives, colourings or sugar,' the quoted source pointed out.
