Romania cannot be anything other than a supporter of international rules, because this is the safe path for our country, declared Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
He responded thus when asked what Romania's approach should be regarding Greenland and whether sending Romanian troops to Greenland would be discussed as a working option.
"I believe that such a working hypothesis is excluded. As to the situation in Greenland, it is very good that after the Davos summit things have cooled down. Discussions are taking place to resolve both the issues related to the independence of this territory, but also the existence of a formula through which the United States can consolidate its military bases in that area. But I believe - and this is a personal conviction apart from the position I am holding today - that it is important for Romania to support internationally policies related to respecting international rules. I told you, considering what area of the world we are in and what historical events have taken place over the years in this part of the world. And I believe that we cannot be anything other than a supporter of borders, of international rules, because this is the safe path for Romania", Ilie Bolojan said on Digi 24 TV station on Friday evening.
In the context, he was asked if, from his point of view, the president of AUR, George Simion, betrayed national interests when, while on a visit to the USA, he cut a cake in the shape of the map of Greenland, glazed with the flag of the United States of America.
"Every politician does what he thinks, behaves as he thinks appropriate. (...) I think we have to think as Romanians if someone had made a gesture related to the map of Romania, if he would have felt good. Thinking about situations in which Romania had territorial problems, let's not forget what happened before World War II and so on. So, it's his decision", declared Bolojan.
He added that, in his opinion, Simion's gesture is not one that has a criminal connotation, emphasizing that he does not believe that this is Romania's problem at the moment, when asked about a petition initiated to investigate the AUR leader for national treason.
"Every man, I told you, behaves politically as he thinks fit. I try to be objective. I do not think that it is a gesture that has a criminal or other connotation. But, of course, in the parliamentary level, you know, very often committees of inquiry are formed, politics is done. (...) I do not think that this is Romania's problem today. I think it is too much though", declared Bolojan.
