The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in Tel Aviv will open the "Brancusi Year" on February 11 with a conference by art historian Doina Lemny on the artistic career of the pioneering sculptor, the Institute announced in a release.
The event will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the ICR headquarters and is aimed at the Israeli cultural public, the artistic and academic community, and all those interested in modern art and major figures of European culture.
The conference, titled "Following Brancusi's Footsteps: In Search of the Essence of Things", offers a broad, well-documented exploration of Constantin Brancusi's artistic and spiritual universe. Doina Lemny, art historian, curator and former researcher at the Musée National d'Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou in Paris, is the author of numerous reference works and curator of major exhibitions dedicated to the Romanian sculptor.
During the event, Lemny will trace Brancusi's artistic journey from his academic training at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest to his radical break with traditional conventions and his integration into the modernist and avant-garde movements. She will discuss emblematic works illustrating his pursuit of simplified form and essential meaning, as well as the role of his Paris studio as a space of creation, reflection and synthesis.
A central focus will be the Monumental Ensemble in Targu Jiu, presented as a symbolic return of the artist to Romania and a synthesis of the themes Brancusi developed throughout his career.
"The ensemble, deeply connected to the history of Romania and Europe since the early 20th century, has become a place of meditation on love, death and human existence itself. Its international recognition, through its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024, confirms the universal value of Brancusi's legacy," the Institute notes.
