Buzau Mayor Constantin Toma on Tuesday informs that steps have been taken to transform the Boboc military airport into a civil and military one, which could be named Otopeni II, with the Ministry of National Defence specifying, in the context, that a rigorous analysis is needed first, with the final decision to be based exclusively on Romania's defence and national security interests.
According to the Buzau City Hall, the development of a civil airport in Boboc would bring benefits, given that it is in the immediate proximity of the A7 Motorway and the 500 railway line. (...) The project could be implemented through the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument.
"We sent it to SAFE, we haven't received any answer yet, I think it's also very important from a military point of view, considering that we have a war at our border. I hope in the near future we'll have a civil airport in Buzau," Mayor Constantin Toma said on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry of National Defence, such a project requires a series of approvals and a detailed analysis, which takes into account Romania's defence and national security interests.
"In order for the mentioned real estate investment project to be implemented, the beneficiary has the legal obligation to request and obtain the approval of the Ministry of National Defence, according to Law no. 50/1991 on the authorisation of the execution of construction works and H.G. no. 62/1996, which establishes the objectives for which the approval of the Defence General Staff is required. After receiving the request, the MApN will analyse the project and decide based on the operational compatibility criteria, the impact on the controlled airspace and the need to maintain the security and functionality of the military units in the area, including the Boboc Air Base. Any transformation of a part of the airfield or modification of the airspace must be strictly evaluated. The final decision will be based exclusively on the defence and national security interests of Romania," a press release sent by the Ministry of National Defence to AGERPRES on Tuesday reads.
