Our main goal since the Paltinu crisis began has been to ensure the water supply for the affected localities, Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests Diana Buzoianu said on Monday in the plenary meeting of the Chamber of Deputies during "the Government's Question time in Parliament."
"Since the Paltinu crisis started, we had a clear goal, namely to supply water to the communities which today are affected by this crisis. I have done everything within my power and that of the Ministry of Environment, and today, thanks to the work of local and national authorities, there is household water in all localities and in the coming period, once all checks by the DSP [Public Health Directorate] are completed, there will also be potable water. Meanwhile, while some people were working to provide water to these localities, others were just spreading propaganda," Buzoianu said.
The Environment Minister added that she had seen "a mountain of fake news during the Paltinu incident" and outlined the timeline of events that led to the problems in Prahova and Dambovita counties.
In the minister's view, "against the backdrop of the crisis created by this total lack of professionalism and coordination between the two authorities, a national panic was also created through the spread of fake news, which even raised national security risks."
She also pointed out that the reforms initiated at the Ministry of Environment will continue.
"I want to be clearly understood: I will not be intimidated, I will not give in to pressure no matter how much you shout, I will not yield to pressure no matter how much you try to block the reforms. Yes, at the Ministry of Environment, in the past few months, reforms have been carried out that had been blocked for decades and it is normal for you to be afraid, because your people are still there, those who have been protected for years. I tell you one thing: the reforms will continue no matter how much you shout," she added.
Over 100,000 people in several communities from Prahova and Dambovita counties were been left without drinking water since Friday, 28 November, because of the works at the Paltinu reservoir.
The Prahova County Council announced in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Monday that all the localities affected by the Paltinu water crisis have been supplied again, but the water can currently be used only for toilet hygiene, the Prahova Public Health Directorate will confirm, after sample testing, whether the water is potable.
Environment, Waters and Forests Minister Diana Buzoianu was invited on Monday to "the Government's Question time in Parliament" at the request of the Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) parliamentary group, within the debate called "The administrative disaster at the Paltinu reservoir: violations of public health regulations, national energy risk and the Ministry of Environment's responsibility in managing an out-of-control crisis."
