Romanian athlete Catalin Chirila won the gold medal in the men's 1,000-metre canoe single event, on Saturday, at the 2025 ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships in Racice (Czech Republic).
Chirila successfully defended his champion title obtained last year in Szeged, scoring a time of 3 min 46 sec 781/1000. Czech Martin Fuksa ranked second, with 3 min 46 sec 838/1000, and Moldovan Serghei Tarnoschi ranked 3rd, with 3 min 49 sec 128/1000, agerpres reports.
In the final of the men's 200-metre canoe single event, Ilie Sprincean ranked 7th, with a time of 39 sec 628/1000.
The gold medal went to Spaniard Pablo Grana, who scored 38 sec 291/1000, silver went to Pole Oleksii Koliadych, in 38 sec 338/1000, and Ukrainian Andrii Rîbaciok completed the podium, with 38 sec 544/1000.
On Sunday, the Romanians will compete in two other finals, in the 500-metre single canoe (Catalin Chirila), respectively the 500-metre canoe double (Ilie Sprincean, Oleg Nuta).
At the 2024 European Championships in Szeged (Hungary), Chirila won gold in the 1,000 m and placed fourth in the 500 m, while Sprincean and Nuta took 9th place in the 500 m and sixth place in the 1,000 m.
