Catalin Chirila qualifies with best time for World Championships C1 M 1000 semi-finals
Romanian athlete Catalin Chirila qualified with the best time of the heats for the semi-finals of the 1,000-metre canoe single (C1 M 1000) event on Wednesday at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg (Germany), after achieving a similar feat in the 500-metre event, told Agerpres.
In the 1,000m Olympic event, Chirila was recorded with a time of 3 min 57 sec 524/1000, being the only competitor to go under four minutes. The semi-finals are scheduled for Thursday 24 August at 17:34 and the final will take place on Saturday at 13:00. Chirila is the reigning world champion in this event.
The competition counts towards qualification for the 2024 Olympics, with the top six finishers earning tickets to Paris.
In the men's 1,000m canoe double, Ilie Sprincean and Oleg Nuta placed second in the third heat with a time of 3 min 46 sec 918/1000, qualifying for the semi-finals.
Carmen Morawietz placed 7th in the heats in the kayak single, both in the 500m (02:12.325 - eliminated) and the 1000m (04:48.715 - qualified for the semi-finals).
Tania Virijac will also compete in the semi-finals of the women's 1,000m canoe single, after placing seventh in the second heat (05:22.391).
The Romanian team for Duisburg is made up of four boys and two girls. Catalin Chirila competes in the 1,000 m (Olympic) and 500 m (Olympic) canoe single, Ilie Sprincean and Oleg Nuta compete in the 1,000 m and 500 m (Olympic) canoe double, Tania Virijac and Oleksandr Komiahin compete in the 500 m mixed double canoe, Oleksandr Komiahin in the canoe single (5,000 m), Tania Virijac in canoe single in 1,000 m and 200 m (Olympic event) and Carmen Morawietz in kayak single in 1,000 m and 500 m (Olympic event).
