Chairperson of the Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee Titus Corlatean stated on Thursday that he will not begin hearings in the parliamentary committees for ambassadorial nominees whose appointments he learns about from the press, until a "direct" discussion takes place, calling for respect towards Parliament and due procedures.
"I found out from the press about the intention to nominate a new Romanian ambassador to a country with which we have a strategic partnership - a very important bilateral relationship of strategic character. I faced a practically identical situation in February 2022, when, as now, I accidentally found out such information from the media, directly concerning the exercise of the Foreign Affairs Committee's competencies, which I chair. It is not about the name of the person nominated as ambassador, but about a principle about procedures and the respect that must be shown to Parliament by other institutions," Corlatean wrote Wednesday evening on Facebook.
He added that his previous public stance and comments expressed in February 2022 remain "entirely valid."
On 6 February 2022, Corlatean, who had the same position as chairperson of the Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee, declared that he would not start hearings in the specialised committees for 12 proposed ambassadors until a "direct" discussion was held with representatives of the Presidential Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, regarding the observance of the rules of loyal cooperation between institutions, so that parliamentarians would no longer learn from the press about ambassadorial recalls and appointments.
At that time, the Social Democrat senator emphasised that Parliament must be respected in accordance with its competencies and that the "uninspired mode of institutional functioning" should be ended.
According to the press, Cristian Diaconescu and Luminita Odobescu, who are ending their terms as presidential advisers at their own request, could be appointed ambassadors to Turkey and Spain, respectively.
