The Chamber of Deputies approved in a plenary meeting on Wednesday the designation of 2027 as the "Ilie Nastase Year," in recognition of the former tennis player's status as a leading international sporting figure and his significant contribution to the development of global sport and the promotion of Romania's image.
"The year 2027 is hereby designated as the Ilie Nastase Year.' The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee is appointed as the coordinating institution for all activities carried out during 2027 and will draw up a calendar of sporting and educational activities to be sent to national authorities, as well as to Romania's diplomatic missions and representations operating in other states. On the occasion of the Ilie Nastase Year,' a legend of national and global sport, central and local public administration authorities, sports institutions in the country, as well as organisations of citizens belonging to national minorities may organise sporting, educational and artistic events and activities," the adopted draft law stipulates.
According to the document, Parliament, the Presidential Administration, the Government, local public administration authorities and public institutions subordinated to or coordinated by them may allocate funds from their own budgets or from other legally attracted sources in order to organise or provide logistical and/or financial support for sporting, cultural, artistic and educational events or promotional programmes marking the "Ilie Nastase Year."
The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation and the Romanian Television Corporation, as public services, may produce, broadcast or rebroadcast editorial content promoting the actions and activities carried out as part of the events dedicated to the "Ilie Nastase Year."
The draft law was also adopted by the Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making body in this case.
