The "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF) in Cluj-Napoca has kicked off construction works at the largest integrated medical simulation and research centre in Southeastern Europe, worth more than 50 million euros, the rector of this university, Anca Buzoianu, told a press conference on Thursday.

The new centre will be funded from the university's own resources as well as through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), agerpres reports.

Rector Anca Buzoianu stated that the project's goal is to train more competent doctors.

"This is a moment of joy for us. It will be the largest integrated medical simulation and research centre in Southeastern Europe, a project that speaks about the future and quality investments. It is an integrated, coherent, and functional centre. Five years ago, we realised that modern medical education does not only mean theory and practice; it also means simulation and training to ensure patient safety. Our students need to practice medical procedures on simulators, computer programmes, and mannequins before performing them on real patients. The aim of this centre is to train more competent doctors. It will be a centre for experimental surgery and training, but it will also include a new university library, making it UMF's most extensive infrastructure project and its largest building," said rector Anca Buzoianu.

According to her, the centre represents a strategic investment in education and research, a project that will train generations of professionals.

The integrated centre will consist of a building with two sections, housing a Simulation, Training, and Research Centre for professional skill development, an Experimental Surgery and Training Centre, as well as a library.

The building will have a total constructed area of 17,000 square metres, of which 13,000 square metres are allocated to Section A - the Simulation Centre, and 3,900 square metres to Section B - the Library. The complex will include three basement levels with a civil protection shelter, 133 parking spaces, shared technical areas, and the infrastructure required for the operation of the two facilities.
