CNATDCU vice-president: Important issue of higher education - the quality of scientific research

The vice-president of the National Council for Attestation of University Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates (CNATDCU), Marius Andruh, declared on Thursday, in a debate, that an important issue of Romanian higher education is the international visibility from the point of view of the quality of the scientific research activity, agerpres.ro confirms.

"Let's not forget that an important issue of our higher education is the international visibility in terms of the quality of what is happening, respectively the scientific research activity. (...) At CNATDCU we are now analyzing theses that were written many years ago, but we should be concerned from now on, if we want to be great universities, the quality of the research, the quality of the journal in which we publish, the quality of the articles that come from the doctoral theses," said the academician.

He stressed that care must be taken to ensure the quality of scientific papers developed in Romanian universities.

"Someone who evaluates such a file should be careful, because otherwise promoted in undeserved places are people who do not lead to the development of our universities as we want. We must take care to ensure the quality of the scientific papers developed in our universities and through doctoral students and through the work of others who do not necessarily must have a doctorate", said Andruh at the workshop on "Transparency and Integrity in the Higher Education System," organized by the Senate's Committee on Education, Youth and Sports.

The chair of this parliamentary committee, Monica Anisie, said that "never" has any action been taken against any doctoral supervisor for plagiarized work.

"Perhaps the leader of that scientific work also has an important role to play in this endeavour. Because we have always blamed those who plagiarized it. But isn't the person who conducted that doctorate also responsible? Law 1 provides for this approaches," Anisie explained.

According to the president of the National Council of Rectors, Daniel David, in order to be "anchored" in the European academic environment, Romanian universities must take seriously values such as "transparency" and "integrity."

"We all know that transparency and integrity are fundamental values of the EU and that means the academic environment as well. And if Romanian universities really want to be anchored in the European academic environment, they must take these values very seriously," said the rector of Babes-Bolyai University.
