Coast Guard crew on Frontex mission rescue 126 people from inflatable boats in Aegean Sea

The crew of the maritime patrol vessel MAI 1104 of the Romanian Coast Guard deployed to Greece as part of the Frontex Agency's 2017 Joint Operation 'Poseidon Sea' rescued 126 people - including 41 children - off two inflatable boats at risk of sinking in the Aegean Sea, a Wednesday release of the Border Police General Inspectorate said. 

According to the cited source, last weekend, the crew of the MAI 1104 vessel that is on a mission to monitor the European Union's external maritime border under the 2017 Joint Operation 'Poseidon Sea' identified during a specific coastline patrol action two overcrowded inflatable boats in the Aegean Sea. 

"After assessing the situation, and given that the boats were overcrowded and at risk of sinking, the Romanian border police crew kicked off the rescue action, transferring aboard the Coast Guard ship 126 people: 41 children, 26 women and 59 men. They provided the rescued migrants with assistance, food and water, landing them safely a few hours later in the port of Chios and handing them over to the Greek authorities for the standard procedures (medical assistance care, identification, registration, fingerprinting, etc.)," the release said. 

Since the beginning of the year, Romanian border guards on the Frontex mission in Greece have rescued more than 1,400 people in danger of drowning on board of small boats adrift the Greek territorial waters.
