The National Weather Administration issued on Saturday a Code Yellow advisory for snowfall and strong winds for 16 counties in the regions of Transylvania, Banat, Oltenia and Muntenia, effective for the next two days.
Thus, between January 3, 10:00 p.m. and January 5, 8:00 p.m., Banat, southwestern Transylvania, western and northern Oltenia and the Southern and Western Carpathians will have significant precipitation of 30 - 50 liters per square meter - predominantly as snowfall, with accumulations of 30 - 40 cm locally in the mountains, and of 10 - 25 cm in low-lying areas.
In the mountains, the wind will speed at 50 - 70 km/h, and 70 - 85 km/h at altitudes above 1,700 meters; snowfall will temporarily be accompanied by blizzard and low visibility.
The counties under the Code Yellow advisory are Timis, Caras-Severin, Mehedinti, Hunedoara, Gorj, Valcea, Alba, Cluj (southwest), Salaj (southwest and center), Bihor (south, southeast, center), Arad (east and center), Sibiu (south), Brasov (south), Arges (north), Dambovita (north) and Prahova (north).
Weather forecasters have also issued an advisory for moderate precipitation, snow layer, black ice, strong winds and blizzard conditions for mountain areas, effective until January 5 at 8:00 p.m. During this interval, precipitation will spread over most of the country, with amounts hitting generally 10 - 30 liters per square meter.
Snowfall will predominate in the mountains, which could see 20 - 50 cm of snow.
Hilly areas, as well as Transylvania and Maramures will receive mainly sleet and snow, with snow depths expected to reach 5 - 15 cm. There will be mixed precipitation in Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia and in smaller areas in Crisana, Moldova and Dobrogea. Black ice is likely to form in spots.
The wind will gust in the mountains, especially at high altitudes, at speeds exceeding 70 - 80 km/h, locally and temporarily causing blizzard conditions.
Until January 9 there will temporary precipitation across all regions, with locally significant amounts, the meteorologists said.
