Road safety investments come not just with human, but with economic benefits as well, at a time when the total cost of traffic accidents in Europe is estimated to be somewhere between 2 and 3 percent of the EU's gross domestic product, "a huge amount", European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean declared on Wednesday in a video message sent to the participants in the debate "ThinkHealth 2023/Settling into the future" organized at the Parliament Palace.
"Last year more than 20,000 people died on the roads of the European Union, and these are not the only victims of road traffic. For every death we estimate that there are six seriously injured in traffic accidents. A French case study showed that three quarters of the people who sustained a serious trauma in a traffic accident have not fully recovered even three years after the incident. Around a quarter of these are left with a lifelong disability," said the European Commissioner, agerpres reports.
Valean mentioned that Romania can benefit from over 12 billion euros in EU funding for transport modernization.
