The number of companies and sole proprietors (PFAs) in Romania that became insolvent in the first eight months of 2025 was standing at 4,561, down 2.06% from the same period in 2024, when 4,657 became insolvent , according to data published on the website of the National Companies Registry (ONRC).
Most companies and PFAs that became insolvent were registered in Bucharest, namely 827, up 1.6% compared from the first eight months of 2024.
On the next places in the hierarchy of insolvencies are the counties of Bihor, with 412 insolvencies (plus 2.74%), Cluj - 310 insolvencies (minus 5.78%), Ilfov - 240 (plus 27.66%), Timiş - 239 (minus 12.13%) and Prahova - 151 (minus 4.43%).
On the other hand, the fewest cases of insolvency were recorded in the counties of Covasna, namely 16 (minus 27.27% compared to the period January-August 2024), Harghita - 21 (plus 23.53%), Botosani - 22 (minus 42.11%) and Vaslui - 26 (minus 7.14%).
By fields of business, the highest number of insolvencies was recorded in wholesale, retail, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles,1,004 (minus 17.57% from the first eight months of 2024), construction - 866 (minus 10.72%), transport and storage - 515 (plus 8.42%) and the manufacturing industry - 481 (minus 12.39%).
In August 2025, 499 insolvencies were registered, most of them in Bucharest (61) and in the counties of Bihor (52), Timis (40), Ilfov (39) and Cluj (31).
