Computer-equipped households this year account for 65.6 percent of the total, and 68.6 percent have internet access, shows data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
A survey on the population's access to IT & C technology has found a quite considerable difference as regards computer ownership depending on the residential environment, as 75.9 percent of urban households are computer-equipped, while the computer ownership rate in rural areas is only 51.9 percent.
Of the total of people aged 16 to 74, 72.5 percent have used a computer at least once.
The regions with most internet connections were Bucharest-Ilfov (more than 4 in 5 households), followed by the West and North-West regions. The lowest shares of household internet connections are in the regions South-Muntenia (63.3 pct) and North-East (61.3 pct).
By home internet connection types, fixed broadband internet accounts for 87.5 pct, mobile broadband internet stands at 48.1 pct, and narrowband connections account for 9.4 pct.
Of the total persons aged 16 - 74, people who have ever used the internet account for 73.5 pct, of whom 86.8 pct reported internet usage in the last 3 months. Of the current users 73.3 pct are using the internet on a daily basis or almost daily.
In a breakdown by development regions, the share of people having ever used the internet was 87.3 pct in the Bucharest-Ilfov region - the highest percentage nationwide - followed by the West region with 82.3 pct, and at a considerable distance by the regions North-West (76 pct), Center (73.2 pct), South-West Oltenia (70.4 pct), while the rest account for less than 70 pct.
Male internet users account for a little more than women: 74.8 pct compared to 72.1 pct.
The survey found a downward trend of internet usage with the rising age, as 93.5 pct of the persons in the 16-34 age bracket are using the internet, while in the age category 55 - 74 just 44 percent are using the internet.
