Romania will be present at New York's Battery Dance Festival running August 12 - 16 with the American premiere of the contemporary dance show "Balkan Ballerinas" produced by Romanian company Platforma 13, the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York announced in a release.

There are two performances of the show scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday on the open-air stage in Rockefeller Park - Battery Park City.

"'Balkan Ballerinas' is a choreographic creation by Anca Stoica and Sergiu Dita, a raw and poetic exploration of Eastern European and Balkan identity through a scenic language that is both courageous and poetic. (...) Drawing inspiration from the stereotypes and stigmas projected by the West on the Balkans, the show takes an artistic radiography of a complex cultural space located on the border between past and present, folklore and rave, ballet and the urban ethno-pop style 'manele'," specifies the cited source.

The performers are Sergiu Dita, Elena Sofia Sitaru-Onofrei and Andreea Valean. The sound design is by RAW Creatives, with music composed by Daniel Stanciucu and Adrian Piciorea, and the visual concept is complemented by Dorian Bolca's lighting design. The conceptual dimension of the performance is underpinned by the anthropological research signed by Laura Maria Ilie.

Platforma 13 is a Romanian artistic duo founded by choreographers Anca Stoica and Sergiu Dita, dedicated to research, experimentation and overcoming the conventions of performing arts. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and independent projects, Platforma 13 contributes to increasing the visibility of Romanian contemporary dance, both on the national and international stage.

Established in 1982, Battery Dance Festival is New York City's longest-running free dance festival and one of the most important international events dedicated to choreographic art, bringing together every year dance companies from around the world and offering free performances to the New York audiences.

The program showcases a diversity of styles - from contemporary dance to traditional forms - and promotes cultural exchange and artistic dialogue between communities.

The event is organized by Battery Dance, a company founded in 1976 by choreographer Jonathan Hollander, and attracts thousands of local and international spectators every year.

With a long tradition, Romania's participation in the Battery Dance Festival is supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.
