Gender Quotas Instead of Equal Opportunities? Pure meritocracy is no longer favored in the political world, so discussions are increasingly focusing on imposing gender quotas: 30% of the candidates on electoral lists should be women. A survey conducted by the Center of Urban and Regional Sociological (CURS) shows that Romanians partially support this idea.

According to the research, the idea of introducing gender quotas into the law does not have majority support, but the idea of better representation for women in politics is endorsed.

Public Opinion on Representation of Women in Politics:

How do you think better representation of women in politics should be achieved?

  • Political parties should create internal regulations, but there should not be a law – 43%
  • There should be a law requiring parties to include a minimum number of women on party lists – 37%
