The frequency of cyber incidents reported globally has increased by 22% this year compared to 2024, and the most targeted sectors are the consumer products industry, professional and consulting services, manufacturing and real estate, according to the international study "2025 Global Cyber Risk Report", published on Friday.

According to research conducted by the Aon Group, ransomware remains one of the most common and costly forms of cyberattack, despite a slight decrease in the average value of payments.

Thus, the number of ransomware claims increased significantly between 2020 and 2023, and the increasingly sophisticated nature of the incidents implies major indirect costs, such as business interruption and reputational damage. The most targeted sectors were the consumer and industrial products industry, the professional services and consulting sector, manufacturing and real estate.

Of the 1,414 cyber incidents analyzed in the specialized report, 56 evolved into events that generated reputational losses, and companies affected by such incidents recorded an average decrease of 27% in shareholder value.

"Malware and ransomware attacks are the most likely to trigger reputational damage, accounting for 60% of all such events, even though they only represent 45% of all cyber incidents. The report also highlights five essential factors for limiting reputational impact: preparation, leadership, rapid response, communication and change. At the same time, a major challenge is signaled: managing risks that cannot be transferred through insurance, such as reputational ones, which makes prevention and rapid response to the crisis essential," note the authors of the specialized research.

Aon Romania is the local subsidiary of Aon plc (NYSE: AON), a world leader in providing risk management solutions, insurance and reinsurance brokerage, human resources consulting and outsourcing services.
