Prime Minister Viorica Dancila had a meeting with General Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Francis Gurry on Tuesday, in which she pointed out Romania's interest in hosting an external WIPO office in Bucharest.
"[Viorica Dancila] pointed out Romania's interest in hosting an external WIPO office in Bucharest, a project with political and economic features. The Prime Minister also pointed out that Romania, together with the other EU member states, is a an active participant in the talks on the finalization of the Treaty on the Protection of Audiovisual Organizations, and in this regard, the Romanian Government supports the idea of organizing in Bucharest the next Diplomatic Conference on the conclusion of a Treaty for the Protection of Audiovisual Organizations", the Government Press Office informed in a press release.
According to the same source, the prime minister provided assurances that Romania supports the work of the organization and the development of the global intellectual property system, given the rapid pace of development of human technologies and creativity in general. At the same time, Viorica Dancila referred to the Government's activity in this field, "invoking incentives granted in the relevant sectors for the development of intellectual property assets", as well as the support provided to the research environment for access to public inventions.
According to the release, Francis Gurry congratulated the Government for the way in which the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council is taking place and the progress made in the first months of this mandate.
"Moreover, Francis Gurry particularly appreciated the notable progress made by the Romanian Presidency [of the EU Council] in reaching a political agreement with the European Parliament on the Copyright Directive in the Digital Single Market. Moreover, the WIPO representative emphasized the role of the organization in promoting intellectual property as a factor of economic, social and cultural development in each country and showed cooperation very good that the organization has with Romania," said the same source.
WIPO is one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations, and it has as main tasks the international development of an intellectual property system capable of rewarding creativity, stimulating innovation and contributing to economic development. WIPO was founded by the Stockholm Convention of 14 June 1967, mandated by the 184 member states to promote the protection of intellectual property worldwide through cooperation between states and cooperation with other international organizations.
Francis Gurry was reelected as General Manager of OMPI in 2014 for his second term (2014-2020).
Romania is a member of the General Assembly, of the Conference, of the Coordination Committee and of the Program and Budget Committee and participates, through the representatives of the Romanian Copyright Office (ORDA), in all the meetings of the Permanent Committees and the Advisory Councils with attributions in the field of copyright.
