PNL MEP Daniel Buda, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture, stated in Strasbourg on Wednesday that, following discussions with European Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, exports of vaccinated animals to third countries will be unblocked within a month at the latest.
"I want to send a very clear message to sheep farmers. Within a month at mostfollowing discussions held with (European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Oliver) Várhelyiexports to third countries of animals that have been vaccinated will be unblocked. This is so they know how to plan their future farm management. Farmers are currently facing an acute shortage of fodder and water; if you also lack a market to sell these animals, the problems are obviously severe," Buda stated during a briefing for Romanian journalists.
He emphasized that there are "firm promises from the EC that we will receive over 1,300,000 doses to vaccinate the animals (against small ruminant plague - Ed. note) and, at the same time, that we will be able to export these animals to markets in third countries."
Against this backdrop, the PNL MEP denounced the "hijacking of the protests (held in Bucharest on Tuesday) by extremist forces."
"Livestock farmers face real problems that require a solution, and I raised this issue here at the European Parliament during the State of the Union debate, calling on Ursula von der Leyen to continue supporting the agricultural sector; however, what happened in Romania yesterdaythe hijacking of these protestsdoes us no credit at the European level. Because farmers' problems are not solved in this manner," added Daniel Buda.
