The process of joining the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development represents a catalyst for the modernization of public policies and the consolidation of institutions, and if we find the recipe to remove barriers to entrepreneurship and innovation, we will achieve sustainable and yet accelerated growth, declared on Monday the Minister of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, Ambrozie-Irineu Darau.

"The OECD accession process represents a catalyst for the modernization of public policies and the consolidation of institutions. We remain firmly committed, together with all the institutions involved, to transforming them into policies and concrete results for the benefit of the Romanian economy and citizens. Competitiveness adapted to the pace of today's world will be a challenge for every economy. It is time to reinvent ourselves and dare to offer different solutions compared to those tried so far. I am convinced that only if we find the recipe to remove barriers to entrepreneurship and innovation, will we achieve sustainable and yet accelerated growth," said Darau at the launch event of the most recent Economic Survey dedicated to Romania, conducted by the OECD, agerpres reports.

According to him, the launch of the economic study comes at a particularly opportune moment, the analysis and recommendations in the specific chapter aimed at strengthening competitiveness and economic resilience being extremely relevant in the context of global uncertainties generated by the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.

"How does the Ministry of Economy respond? First of all, we will ensure the strengthening of the dialogue with the business environment. Economic and industrial policies are built in constant consultation with economic actors, including small and medium-sized enterprises, the backbone of the economy. This dialogue, together with the instruments for assessing the impact of regulations, allows us to base public decisions on economic realities," the Minister of Economy emphasized.

He added that, secondly, companies will be supported and their relationship with the state will be simplified, reducing bureaucracy and digitizing procedures being essential.

"Entrepreneurial dynamism is an important driver of economic competitiveness. As the OECD economic study highlights, setting up and operating a business in Romania still remains relatively burdensome from an administrative point of view. Reducing bureaucracy and digitizing procedures are essential in this regard. Dedicated entrepreneurship programs, such as StartUp Nation, contribute to stimulating private initiative, and the OECD study emphasizes the need to align them more closely with innovation objectives," explained Darau.

A third objective aims to facilitate the connection of companies, increasing productivity through investments in skills, innovation and technology being essential for facilitating the connection of Romanian companies in global value chains, the Minister of Economy also stated.

"As the study shows, the relatively slow growth of productivity may limit the connection of Romanian entrepreneurship with foreign investments in Romania and may erode the cost-based competitive advantage. In this context, the Ministry of Economy supports the connection of Romanian companies with global value chains, collaboration between companies and the development of opportunities for investment and innovation," Darau said.

At the same time, he also specified, the rapid development of artificial intelligence can represent a true T0 moment for accelerating innovation, and capitalizing on this opportunity can contribute to reducing gaps and strengthening the attractiveness of the Romanian economy.

Last but not least, human capital remains a major priority, as Romania has a significant potential of Romanian specialists.

"However, as the OECD analysis highlights, one of the main challenges is to strengthen vocational training and dual education, including through the involvement of companies and industrial partners," the minister pointed out.
