David Popovici blasts to European gold in men's 200m freestyle

Romanian David Popovici won the men's 200m freestyle gold on Friday at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade.

 

Defending champion Popovici won by a large margin, timing 1:43.13, yet behind his own performance delivered two years ago in Rome (competition record - 1:42.97).

The Romanian was three seconds faster than in the semifinals (1:46.15).

On Wednesday, Popovici also won the 100m freestyle continental title, thus bringing Romania its only two medals in Belgrade. Popovici will compete in these events at the Paris Olympic Games.

At the 2022 European Aquatics Championships in Rome, Romania won two gold medals, both through David Popovici, in the men's 100m and 200m freestyle.
