David Popovici, double world champion and Olympic champion in swimming, has raised in 10 days more than 160,000 euros for the construction of a family home, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES.
"He thus surpassed the initial goal of the fundraising campaign started together with Hope and Homes for Children, of 115,000 euros, that is a quarter of the amount needed to build a family home for 11 children with special needs, medium and severe, in the last foster home in Bucharest, sector 5," the source said.
Approximately 147,000 euros come exclusively from individual donations - over 7,200 donations made upon David Popovici's appeal between September 30 - October 9, 2024, and the difference, from corporate donations.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every gesture of kindness! Your support is overwhelming and is further proof of the power we have when we come together. I wanted, at the beginning of the campaign, to be many and to be kind to these children. However, I had never imagined that in the first 24 hours after my first message over 50,000 euros would be raised, almost half the amount - nor that I would exceed the target, even though I wanted to. But there are still a lot of bricks to put in the house, that's why I ask you to stay with us and the children," said David Popovici.
As a sign of gratitude to all those who have joined him in this endeavor, David Popovici has chosen to donate his award-winning outfit worn on the podium of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games - the shirt, sweatshirt and sweatpants, along with his sports footwear. All those who have made a donation of minimum 50 lei on the campaign page (ambasadorpentruacasa.ro/david) will automatically enter the draw, and the winner will receive the prize from David Popovici.
Through this humanitarian campaign, the organisers aim to raise the entire amount of 450,000 euros, which is needed to build the family home that will provide a safe and adapted home for children with special needs.
