Minister of National Defence Radu Miruta met on Tuesday with a delegation of the United States Congress, with discussions focusing on regional security and collective defence.
According to a press release sent to AGERPRES, the dialogue held at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defence highlighted the relevance of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States of America, as well as the latter's contribution to regional and Euro-Atlantic security. Cooperation within NATO and the US military presence in Romania were cited as key elements of collective defence, the MApN specified.
"In this context, it was noted that both the United States and Romania have published national strategic documents in the fields of security and defence, outlining priorities and the general framework for action for each state. The discussions also addressed recent developments in the regional and Euro-Atlantic security environment, with a focus on the implications of the war in Ukraine, the security of the Allied Eastern Flank and the strategic role of the Black Sea region. The importance of maintaining a strengthened deterrence and defence posture, adapted to current security challenges, was emphasised," the press release said.
Defence Minister Miruta and the US delegation, led by Congressman Pat Fallon, also discussed prospects for bilateral defence cooperation, with an emphasis on politico-military dialogue, interoperability and capability development, in support of regional and Euro-Atlantic security, the Ministry of National Defence added.
"The Strategic Partnership with the United States remains a key pillar of Romania's security, and sustained dialogue in the defence field contributes to strengthening collective defence within the North Atlantic Alliance," the defence minister was quoted as saying.
