Defense Minister Vasile Dincu said today that a NATO battle group will be set up in Romania most probably in spring.

"We have taken a step forward by discussing more details with the allies, discussing the formal support we need to set up this 'battle group' in Romania. Of course there are other formal issues to consider, we also have some deadlines. We have finished preparations for this, as the Ministry has announced, so we are waiting and ready for this group. There are still some formal details that need to be solved, we continue bilateral approaches for getting allied support, but here too we are on the right track. We have a few deadlines, we'll see how they will be observed, they are not written in stone - but this spring we will have this 'battle group', this is our hope, and a multinational force to join France in this framework nation status," Dincu told TV broadcaster Digi 24.

At the press conferences held on Wednesday and Thursday NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke of the intention to set up a battle group in Romania, Agerpres.ro informs.

"Ministers decided to develop options for further strengthening NATO's deterrence and defense, including to consider establishing new NATO battle groups in central and eastern, south-eastern Europe," the NATO Secretary General told journalists after the meeting of the allied states' Defense Ministers in Brussels.

"Our military commanders will now work on the details and report back within weeks," he added.

New battle groups are being planned in the East, in the southeast, in Romania and in the Black Sea region, Stoltenberg told a news conference on Wednesday.
