National Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu participated on Friday, through video-conference, in a meeting organized by the European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius, focused on discussions about strengthening the security and defence of the Eastern Flank of the European Union, Agerpres reports.

According to the National Defence Ministry (MApN), the meeting was also attended by representatives of the member states located at the boarder of the Russian Federation's aggression war against Ukraine - Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania, as well as Slovakia and Hungary. Moreover, also participating in the meeting was High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and representatives of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. NATO attended the meeting as an observer, and Ukraine's Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal contributed to the discussions.

The talks focused on the "Eastern Flank Watch" initiative, recently announced by Ursula von der Leyen, which includes an essential project "Drone Wall" - a network of modern technologies capable to detect and neutralize drones and other hostile aerial devices, Minister Ionut Mosteanu mentioned in a post on his Facebook page.

"I underscored three aspects: we must implement this initiative as quickly as possible and Romania will be a fully committed partner; Ukraine's experience on the front line against Russian aggression is vital and must be capitalized on in order to build effective solutions; the Black Sea is a region with specific challenges, and we need to develop tailored solutions to counter naval drones and protect strategic infrastructure," the minister said.

He pointed out that Romania is directly targeted by Russia's intimidations and needs these initiatives to protect its citizens and for the security of the entire Eastern Flank.

"In parallel, coordination with NATO remains fundamental. Such projects serve to deter any destabilization attempts in our region and guarantee that Europe remains secure," Minister Mosteanu conveyed.
