The marked trail to Pietrosul Peak in Macin Mountains National Park (PNMM) could be made accessible for people with disabilities through a project funded by the North Dobrogea Local Action Group in Tulcea County.

The initiative comes from Marian Ilie, from Luncavita commune, who, together with his wife Daniela Ilie, runs an accommodation unit for people with special needs. The idea to adapt the tourist trail in PNMM, which is approximately 7 kilometres long, arose following requests from guests.

"With the help of some friends, I walked four kilometres of this trail. Pietrosul Peak has a low altitude, and much of this route could be adapted to be accessible not only to wheelchair users but also to people with visual and hearing impairments," Marian Ilie, wheelchair-bound since 2002, told AGERPRES.

Daniela Ilie noted that the PNMM trails can only be partially navigated by people with disabilities.

"We have had many tourists visit us with wheelchairs. We informed them about the accessible trails, and as far as the area allowed, they moved through the park with great pleasure. We love nature and encourage tourists to go hiking," Daniela Ilie said.

The North Dobrogea Local Action Group covers a total area of 1,329.68 square kilometres, serving 11 communes and one town, with over 30,000 residents.

With more than 3,450 species of flora and fauna, as well as large areas of steppe vegetation, Macin Mountains National Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1998, is the only area in the European Union where steppe ecosystems coexist with sub-Mediterranean and Balkan forests. The Macin Mountains are particularly significant among Romania's mountain ranges, being the oldest mountains in the country.
