The Save Romania Union (USR) says on Thursday that the European Commission's Report on the rule of law in our country deals "superficially" with justice issues and is far from constituting an up-to-date, complete picture of the judiciary.
According to a USR press release sent to AGERPRES, USR deputy Stelian Ion, former minister of justice, says that the report is "not even close" to the depth of the CVM reports from the past years, which indicated in detail and reasoned what is not working well in he judiciary and what needs to be done.
"It seems that, once again, the European Commission pretends not to see everything that is happening in Romania. It's really hard to believe to be told that the anti-corruption fight is going well, when we all saw it has been barely working for a few years now. We are talking about the DNA that chose not to challenge the conditional release of Remus Truica. (...) The fact that the defendants get rid of the files through the statute of limitations or through laws given with dedication by Ciolacu and Ciuca, which decriminalize tax evasion under a million euros, is a reality and deserves a special chapter in the EC report," says Stelian Ion, quoted in the press release.
According to him, the "serious slippages" of the CSM regarding the "harassment" of some inconvenient magistrates were also covered with too much "lightness" in the magazine.
"Similarly, the fact that even after so many years the serious personnel problems in the judiciary have not been improved. (...) Likewise, the analysis of the main case led to the closure of thousands of criminal files, namely the decision of the CCR regarding the prescription of criminal liability," adds the former minister of justice.
According to the press release, among the problems identified, the European Commission makes express reference to the organization of elections: the use of emergency ordinances is still frequent, even if in a slight decrease in Romania. The Commission states that emergency ordinances should not be used to change the electoral rules, especially just a few months before the elections".
"USR will sound the alarm whenever justice is affected by political decisions or internal actions of anti-reformist groups. It is necessary to know exactly where we are and what is happening with the judicial system. In the future, European bodies should not turn a blind eye to the slippages regarding the rule of law, and let Romania get down to work, as soon as possible, on reforming the judiciary and some essential institutions for the proper functioning of the state", the release also reads.
