Education unionists are picketing the Ministry of Education and Research on Wednesday, dissatisfied with "the Government's intention to further reduce staff expenditure" in the system through a new legislative act.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of the Minister of Education and Research, Daniel David, chanting: "Repeal!."
"A new day of protest before the Ministry of Education. Given that, after the absurd anti-education measures introduced through Law No. 141/2025 and subsequent acts, the education system is already confronted with a lack of qualified staff, inadequate pay, excessive bureaucracy and rising professional stress, the Government now wants to cut a further 10 percent from the budget and create an unprecedented crisis," representatives of the "Spiru Haret" Federation of Education Unions wrote on Facebook.
Members of the Free Trade Union Federation in Education, the "Spiru Haret" Federation of Education Unions and the "Alma Mater" National Trade Union Federation are participating in the protest.
"The Free Trade Union Federation in Education, the 'Spiru Haret' Federation of Education Unions and the 'Alma Mater' National Trade Union Federation are protesting against the Government's intention to further reduce staff expenditure in the education system through a new legislative act that is currently being discussed behind closed doors at the Victoria Palace. We consider such a measure not only ill-timed, but also profoundly unfair, with serious consequences for the education system," the education unionists stated in a press release sent to the media on Tuesday.
According to them, the education system is already facing a lack of qualified staff, inadequate pay, excessive bureaucracy and rising professional stress, and these new cuts risk creating "an unprecedented crisis and a serious violation" of children's right to education.
"It is clear that the experts working on identifying solutions to reduce the budget deficit are not familiar with the concrete activities of the education system. Thousands of children already lack qualified teachers in the classroom and every day hundreds of teachers, including from higher education, give up their hourly paid classes. Any cut decided in the coming period will worsen the staffing crisis, with direct consequences for children," the unionists said.
They are calling on the parties in the governing coalition to abandon these measures.
"It is not the education system that is to blame because those in power in recent years failed to solve the issue of special pensions. It is not the education system that is to blame because Romanian governments have been unable to carry out the reforms needed to receive money from the PNRR [the National Recovery and Resilience Plan]. Education is not to be blamed for cross-party corruption! Do not sacrifice the education again in order to cover sinecures," the education unionists conveyed.
