Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu had a meeting on Tuesday with President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria Dimitar Glavchev, who is on an official visit to Bucharest. The two officials talked including about the wish to access the Schengen area of the two neighbouring countries.
In this context, the recent contact between the two countries, including at a high-level, were evoked, such as the latest meeting of the high-level Romanian-Bulgarian Cooperation Council, in Varna, on 3 October, a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) sent to AGERPRES informs.
The head of the Romanian diplomacy pointed out the importance of the regional cooperation formats, but especially the two countries' presidency of the Council of the EU in the first part of 2018, and in 2019, respectively, which "represents an opportunity to strengthen the cooperation in an European format," according to the source. He hailed Bulgaria's efforts focused on fighting illegal migration and voiced hope for Romania and Bulgaria to join the Schengen area as soon as possible.
