Gabriela Ruse qualifies for 3rd round of Australian Open, for the first time

Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse qualified for the third round of the Australian Open tournament, the first Grand Slam of the year, for the firsr time, after defeating Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, 6-4, 6-4, on Wednesday, in Melbourne.

Ruse (28 years old, 79 WTA) sealed her victory after one hour and 29 minutes of play, agerpres reports.

The Romanian did not lose her serve in this match, saving the only break point she faced from Tomljanovic (32 years old, 78 WTA) had.

Ruse now leads 2-1 in their head-to-head meetings with Tomljanovic, whom she also defeated in 2022, 6-1, 7-5, in the third round of the Dubai qualifying tournament. Tomljanovic won in 2024, in the round of 16 in Hong Kong, 7-5, 6-3.

Also on Wednesday, in the first round of women's doubles, Sorana Cirstea and Russian Ana Kalinskaia were defeated by 4th seeded Elise Mertens (Belgium)/Shuai Zhang (China), 6-4, 6-2, after one hour and 19 minutes of play.

The Romanian-Russian pair will receive 44,000 Australian dollars in prize money and 10 WTA points in doubles.
