Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse claimed a spot in the women's singles main draw of the US Open Grand Slam tournament which starts on Monday at New York's Flushing Meadows after defeating on Thursday Filipino Alexandra Eala 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the last round of the qualifiers, thus also securing $100,000 in prize money and 40 WTA points.

It took 26-year-old Ruse (WTA's 124th) 2 hours and 8 minutes to upset her 19-year-old opponent (WTA's 148th).

The Romanian managed 5 aces and scored 38 winners, compared to Eala's 17, but she also made 8 double faults and 36 unforced errors, as to 26 hit by the Filipino player.

Ruse has never made it past the second round of the US Open, losing in the opening round last year.

She is the third Romanian to reach the US Open singles main draw after Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian were given direct access due to their ranking.
