The profit of the gambling industry cannot be built on the vulnerability of children and young people, declared PNL deputy Raluca Turcan on Monday, after two bills on combating gambling addiction were adopted by the Senate.

"A clear victory for the protection of children and young people from gambling! The two bills that I initiated to combat gambling addiction were adopted in the Senate plenary sitting, although they had received a rejection report in the committee. Thank you to my fellow senators! I am glad that my initiative was supported by parliamentarians from all the governing parties - USR, PSD and UDMR - who understood that the protection of young people must be above any political dispute", Turcan wrote on Facebook.

She mentioned that one bill provides for raising the minimum age for accessing gambling from 18 to 21 years old, this being "a necessary measure to reduce the vulnerability of young people to addictive behaviors during a critical period of development".

The second bill, Turcan pointed out, introduces firm rules for advertising, namely the elimination of online gambling advertisements between 6:00 and 24:00, as in audiovisual, and the total prohibition of using public figures in their promotion, regardless of the platform.

"We no longer allow the image of celebrities to be used to attract teenagers to a major risk. The profit of the gambling industry cannot be built on the vulnerability of children and young people. I hope that these projects will be debated and voted on quickly in the Chamber of Deputies, so that they become law as soon as possible. The protection of young people cannot be postponed", added Raluca Turcan.

On Monday, the Senate adopted two legislative proposals to amend the Emergency Ordinance 77/2009 on the organization and operation of gambling, with measures to protect young people from the scourge of these games. Although the two projects, initiated by a group of PNL, USR, PSD and UDMR parliamentarians, had rejection reports from the specialized committees, in the Senate plenum they gathered the number of votes necessary to be adopted.

On Sunday, USR called for the adoption of the two legislative proposals in the Senate plenary sitting, despite the rejection reports of the Senate's economic and legal committees.
