Gendarmes issued four fines totalling 10,400 lei and filed a report with the criminal investigation authorities for assault following irregularities identified during Thursday's protest in Victoriei Square.

'Checks are continuing to identify and sanction other individuals who violated the applicable legal framework,' the press office of the Directorate General of the Bucharest Municipal Gendarmerie (DGJMB) reported.

The Capital Gendarmerie used hand-held spray devices containing an irritant tear-gas substance to defuse tensions involving some of the demonstrators in Victoriei Square who threw plastic containers and snowballs towards law enforcement forces as well as two metal panels.

According to the quoted source, no one was injured.

'Around 20:45, some of the demonstrators in Victoriei Square threw plastic containers and snowballs towards the law enforcement forces. At the same time, they also threw two metal panels towards the gendarmes (...) We stress that, based on the information available at this time, no one was injured and, in order to defuse the situation and restore its peaceful nature, hand-held spray devices containing an irritant tear-gas substance were used for a short time,' the Capital Gendarmerie said.

At the same time, gendarmes tasked with dialogue with the representatives of the demonstrators called for calm and cooperation between protesters and law enforcement forces.

Thousands of people protested on Thursday evening in Victoriei Square, chanting slogans against the Bolojan Government.
