AGERPRES special correspondent Daniel Florea reports: Romania was just a testing ground for the use of legal institutions in order to interfere with the democratic affairs of the state, Chairman of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) and Vice-President of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Party George Simion responded when asked if Romania is now a precedent for such a situation possibly repeating in other states, like Poland, too.
"I believe that Romania was just the testing ground for this option of using legal institutions, institutions outside the political arena, to interfere with the democratic affairs of the state. The votes were as clear as possible, no one stole votes (...) on the American model, or on that of Bucharest Sector 1. (...) We are happy that Mr. President Mateusz Morawiecki is heading the European Conservative and Reformist Party, and AUR unconditionally supports Mr. Karol Nawrocki's candidacy for the presidency of Poland, on May 18, the time when Romania's second presidential round should also take place. We believe that the correct approach is for the runoff to be held, for us to get back to the constitutional course. We very much believe in democracy and we are appalled, perplexed and saddened by the fact that certain European institutions, starting with the European Commission and ending with the European Council, have not taken a stance on the cancellation of Romania's election," George Simion told a press conference at the European Parliament at the end of the second edition of the international conference "Make Europe Great Again (MEGA)", which took place January 28 - 29 in Brussels.
Simion welcomed the decision of the Venice Commission, even if its report is only advisory.
"We must re-enter the democratic process, and for us this means resuming elections from the second round. We are sending a clear, strong, determined message from here, from the heart of the European Union where we defend our values, of all those gathered at this series of conferences that will continue in all the important capital cities the participants came from, (...) that we will not allow the natural family, our national identities, our Christian faith that represents the old continent to be trodden underfoot. These are the true European values and we will fight for them," said Simion.
Also attending the conference were MEPs Claudiu Tarziu, Gheorghe Piperea, Adrian Axinia and Georgiana Teodorescu, as well as representatives of the ECR Group parties.
