The Romania-Germany partnership has never been more important than it is today, the German ambassador in Bucharest, Peer Gebauer said on Thursday at the reception marking 145 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.
"The friendship between Germany and Romania is a wonderful example of the power of diplomatic cooperation and common values in Europe. Our countries are closely connected through partnership within the EU, NATO, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and many other international formats. Our friendship is based on the ties formed due to the centuries-old presence of the German minority in Romania. We look back on 145 years of diplomatic relations animated by feelings of closeness, gratitude and friendship. We are aware, however, that this partnership has never been more important than today. Only together, only alongside Romania and our European and transatlantic partners can we succeed in facing the current challenges", the diplomat stated.
Present at the event, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu pointed out that "Romania and Germany share the same democratic values on which the European Union is founded: promoting peace, security, respecting fundamental rights and freedoms".
The head of the Romanian diplomacy, Emil Hurezeanu, also highlighted that bilateral relations are defined today by "excellent cooperation, both at the political level and in the economic, social, cultural and interpersonal levels".
"In the past decades, Romanian-German relations have grown permanently, acquiring a privileged, strategic character, and currently the Romanian-German friendship represents an anchor of stability and predictability. I am confident that our relations will continue to develop and achieve fruitful results in all areas of cooperation, to the advantage of both countries and for the good of their citizens", stated the Romanian ambassador to Germany, Adriana Stanescu.
On February 20, 1880, Romania and Germany officially initiated diplomatic relations. Shortly after that, the German Embassy in Bucharest was opened.
