The Government will adopt an emergency ordinance on Tuesday declaring a crisis in the crude oil and/or petroleum products market and establishing measures to protect the economy and the population during this period.

According to a Government press release, the decision was made on Monday by the working group on fuel price increases and solutions to mitigate their impact on the economy and the public, convened by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

"Following discussions, it was decided that the Government will adopt, tomorrow, an emergency ordinance declaring a crisis in the crude oil and/or petroleum products market and establishing measures to protect the economy and the population during this crisis. During the crisis, protective measures will be in place for a period of six months, with the possibility of successive extensions of up to three months as long as the circumstances that prompted the crisis persist. The commercial markup for petrol, diesel and the raw materials used in their production will be limited throughout the entire economic chain," the release said.

At the same time, exports and/or intra-EU deliveries of petrol and diesel may only be carried out by economic operators with the prior written approval of the Ministry of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism and the Ministry of Energy.

"Throughout the crisis, the amount of biofuel in petrol will be reduced to lower the final price," the press release said.

Moreover, the Ministries of Finance, Economy and Energy, together with the Competition Council, will continuously monitor the market and assess any other necessary measures.

The working meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacsu, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare, Minister of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism Irineu Darau, as well as representatives of the Competition Council.
