Health insurance policies can bring new money into the system and lead to a different approach to health care, either in public or private hospitals, Health Minister Alexandru Rafila said Thursday at the debate "Complementary insurance, the solution for the Romanian patient to be a European patient in Romania," organised by DC News Media Group.

"I believe that complementary insurance can bring new money into the system, and lead to a different approach to healthcare, either in public or private hospitals. Because what has been discussed in the public space as Romania, for example, public hospitals can have a package of services that can be provided after working hours or you can choose your doctor and so on and these services that could be offered in public hospitals could also be the result of a complementary insurance package, and this insurance package can be offered by a public insurer or a private one. (...) Many hospitals in Europe do the same thing, hospitals in Israel do exactly the same thing. And this I think is the healthy development that also closes the debate about who is working in the area they work in, in the public or private sector or both, if they offer a specialist the opportunity to work after hours in the health facility where they usually work in," the minister explained.

He said he is a supporter of supplementary health insurance.

According to him, subscriptions to health services offered by various private providers have expanded in Romania.
