Bucharest needs an additional major burns centre for adults, given the sharp rise in severe burn cases in recent weeks, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete said on Friday. He noted that a site has already been identified in Sector 4, where the new unit is "most likely" to be built.
Rogobete visited the construction site of the new Major Burns Centre at the 'Grigore Alexandrescu' Children's Hospital. "Between December 22 and February 10, the number of severe burns in Romania exploded. We had major difficulties managing these cases due to the lack of beds both in Romania and in the EU. Seeing these figures, I believe Bucharest needs another major burns centre for adults," he said, adding that more details are expected in the second half of the year.
The minister said that the 'Grigore Alexandrescu' centre should become operational early next year. "The structural frame for all four floors plus the technical floor is expected to be completed in May. The building should be finished by year-end and commissioned at the start of 2027."
He added that the Timisoara burns centre is completed and undergoing equipment installation, with opening expected in April or May, while the Targu Mures centre is over 95% finished and due to open this summer. The upgraded burns unit at Floreasca Emergency Hospital should be ready in May or June, Agerpres informs.
"A rehabilitation process has begun - the number of beds for severe burns is being reduced from six to four, and the freed space will host all the functions required for a compliant major burns centre," Rogobete said.
He also recalled that the Health Ministry recently approved a new training program for medical staff treating severe burn patients.
