A series of large-scale events dedicated to all categories of the public will take place this year in the city of Hunedoara under the banner "Iancu de Hunedoara: Hero, Voivode, Legend", after 2026 was officially declared "The Year of Iancu de Hunedoara (John of Hunyadi)" to mark the 570th anniversary of the ruler's death, the Hunedoara City Hall announced on Friday.
"We are obliged by the legacy left to us by the Corvin family to honor their memory, especially that of Iancu de Hunedoara, as it should be. We have established a calendar of important events that can be enjoyed by residents of the city and county, but which can also attract as many tourists as possible to Hunedoara," Mayor Dan Boboutanu said in a release.
According to the release, President of Romania Nicusor Dan signed the decree promulgating the law establishing 2026 as "The Year of Iancu de Hunedoara". This year also marks the 570th anniversary of the Battle of Belgrade in July 1456, when Iancu's armies defeated those of Mehmet II, the conqueror of Constantinople. The battle halted the Ottoman advance into Europe for about 70 years.
Iancu de Hunedoara died later that year, on August 11, 1456, succumbing to plague in his military camp at Zemun (today a district of Belgrade).
