The interim president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Sorin Grindeanu, declared on Friday evening in Timisoara that, since the announcement of the withdrawal of the American battalion from Romania, he has not received any reaction from the prime minister and the foreign minister, and from the defense minister "he did not understand very much", while, in his opinion, Romanians need to know what situation we are in from the point of view of national security and what the future plans are.
"Before entering this conference in Timisoara, I checked once more, but Prime Minister Bolojan had not responded to this request. It is absolutely nothing political. Quite simply, we asked for an up-to-date information on the situation we are in and what the future plans are in this field. That's it. Nothing else. (...). I saw the reaction of the President of Romania, Nicusor Dan. As much as he could do from the level of the Presidential Administration, I believe that the President did. What the Minister of Foreign Affairs or the Minister of Defense must do, in return, is to inform the Romanians more clearly - what situation we are in and what plans we have. This is what I want and I believe that every Romanian of good faith wants", said Sorin Grindeanu, answering questions of the press.
The interim president of the social democrats said that the PSD has never turned its back on the citizens, but has only "moved away", and now it must return to the Romanians.
"Since the 1990s and until recently, our political strength has always been in the connection we had with Romanians, with the people. This has always been our main asset. That is why we have won all the parliamentary elections from 1990 until now. That is why we have come up with good public policies for Romanians, because we have known how to maintain this connection with the people. It seems that in the last period we have wanted to be something other than what has characterized us in 35 years. I have also said that, if I am voted in by the PSD Congress, I will bring the party back to where I know it was and where Romanians expect the PSD to be, that is, alongside them, with public policies for Romanians and for the people", explained Grindeanu.
He pointed out that he has no competition with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, because they are not competing on the same track, but rather with the way of doing politics, disapproving of putting numbers above people, referring to the austerity measures in the administration.
"I believe that in a Romania of 2025, you can govern for the people and be efficient. You can go both ways. Efficiency without empathy is not something human, something that brings people closer. But empathy without efficiency is also a job that does not yield results. You have to have both, if you want to govern well. Otherwise, we had, about 40 years ago, a dictator who struggled to pay Romania's foreign debt and starved the people. Then, Timisoara said 'Enough, we can't do it anymore!'. That's why I'm telling you that things have to be in the most perfect balance possible," explained Sorin Grindeanu.
He reiterated that there is a coalition protocol signed by four political parties plus a minority group, which says that, until 2027, the PNL is the party that provides the prime minister.
"There is no one irreplaceable, and there is no one expressly listed there with their first and last names. For now, we are partners in this coalition. We are not comfortable partners, that's true. We are partners who say so every time something doesn't work. I don't think Romanians expect us to say that we don't have any problems when an ordinance like Ordinance 52 is issued, which has blocked Romania, both at the local and central levels. I don't think Romanians expect us to applaud such nonsense. I don't think Romanians expect us, PSD, to agree and not try to fix that aberrant health insurance set up for mothers, for war veterans, for former political prisoners. I don't think that's what Romanians expect from us. Loyalty does not mean silence. Every time when you have public policies that you want to implement within a coalition, if you are in good faith, you say directly what is good, what is not good. But you are not a yes-man in a coalition. Whoever wants PSD to be like that is mistaken, it would not be normal for us to be partners only in facade. We understand this partnership with both good and bad. And when we have something to say, we say it", declared Sorin Grindeanu.
The interim president of PSD participated, on Friday, in the Extraordinary Conference of PSD Timis, during which Sorin Grindeanu was unanimously validated for candidacy for PSD presidency within the party congress, which will take place on November 7.
