More than 3,300 border policemen will be engaged daily in specific missions during the Christmas holidays in order to ensure that document checks and border traffic take place safely and smoothly.
"At the external border, namely at the borders with Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Serbia, additional staff was deployed at the crossing points. Where the situation allows, extra control lanes, including for freight traffic, are open to reduce waiting times," an Inspectorate General of the Border Police (IGPF) release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday informed.
During the holiday period, an increase in road traffic is expected at the border with the Republic of Moldova, especially for outbound traffic from Romania, as many Moldovan citizens working in Western European countries return home.
In order to prevent congestion at certain points, the Border Police recommend using all open crossings along this border: Galati and Oancea (Galati county), Bumbata and Albita (Vaslui county), Sculeni (Iasi county), as well as Stanca and Radauti Prut (Botosani county).
"At the internal border, traffic to Hungary and Bulgaria continues uninterrupted at the former crossing points. However, citizens traveling abroad must carry valid travel documents, namely an identity card or passport," the quoted source said.
For air travel, the IGPF advises passengers to arrive at airports within the time window indicated by airlines, as traffic can increase significantly during this period.
Throughout the holiday period, the Border Police will maintain cooperation with their counterparts in the neighbouring countries, both at internal and external borders, with the aim of ensuring a safe environment for all citizens.
