More than 55 foreigners were detected in illegal situations in the last week, the Immigration Inspectorate General (IGI) announced on Monday.

According to an IGI press release sent to AGERPRES, between 20 and 26 November, immigration police registered 2,222 applications for work permits. A number of 1,855 such documents were approved and 407 were rejected.

Foreign citizens have been issued 2,241 temporary and long-term residence permits, in accordance with the provisions of Emergency Ordinance No. 194 of 2002 on the regime of foreigners in Romania, republished, with subsequent amendments and additions, the source said.

Another 660 residence permits were issued to beneficiaries of temporary protection in the context of the implementation of the provisions of Council Directive 2001/55/EC of 20 July 2001 on minimum standards for giving temporary protection in the event of a mass influx of displaced persons and on measures promoting a balance between the efforts of member states in receiving such persons and bearing the consequences thereof.

"In addition, the immigration police, in cooperation with the police officers in charge of immigration, have detected 56 foreigners in illegal situations. 14 foreigners have been placed in accommodation centres for foreigners taken into public custody," the press release said.

218 actions, controls and checks were carried out, and for the irregularities found the immigration police applied 160 fines, amounting to 199,400 RON, the Immigration Inspectorate General said.
