The complete entry of Romania into the Schengen area is a historical moment that must be properly marked, its significance going far beyond the immediate economic implications, the chief economist of ING Bank Romania, Valentin Tataru told AGERPRES on Thursday.

"The complete entry into the Schengen area is a historical moment that must be properly marked, its significance going far beyond the immediate economic implications. As to the latter, Romania now has the duty to complete this success with what could value it better: a network of modern motorways to cross Romania and connect all the regions of the country.

In addition to increasing the attractiveness of Romania for foreign investments (and we know that Romania lost investments in the past due to the poor infrastructure and the fact that we were not Schengen members), Romanian companies will also have the chance to connect more efficiently to the markets in the west. The new status also paves the way for the transformation of Romania into a logistic hub for the future reconstruction process of Ukraine", said Valentin Tataru.

The ministers of the Interior from the EU countries approved on Thursday morning, in Brussels, the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area with land borders, starting from January 1, 2025.
