The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) lead voting intentions for the parliamentary elections, with the party led by George Simion in first place with 30% in urban areas and 49% in rural areas, while the Social Democrats rank second with 19% and 21% respectively, according to the 5th edition of the BAROMETER Informat.ro - INSCOP Research, released on Thursday.
In urban areas, 30% of respondents said they would vote for AUR if parliamentary elections were held next Sunday. PSD received 19%, Save Romanian Union (USR) 17%, the National Liberal Party (PNL) 17%, the Romanian Hungarian Democratic Union (UDMR) 6%, SENS 5%, POT 4%, and S.O.S. Romania 2%. One per cent would vote for another party, and 1% for an independent candidate.
In rural areas, 49% expressed a preference for AUR, 21% for PSD, 12% for PNL, 7% for USR, 3% for UDMR, 3% for another party, 2% for POT, 2% for S.O.S. Romania, 1% for SENS, and 1% for an independent candidate.
"The BAROMETER Informat.ro - INSCOP Research shows significant differences between urban voting preferences, where competition is balanced among AUR, PSD, USR, and PNL, and rural preferences, where AUR dominates electoral support, followed at a distance by PSD. This pattern reflects not only partisan choices but also different approaches to political power and public discourse. Urban areas, exposed to media diversity and a more deliberative political culture, generate a more fragmented electorate with diverse preferences. Rural areas, by contrast, operate on stronger symbolic cohesion, where opinion formation relies on traditional networks and, amid more acute social and economic issues than in urban areas, favours parties with populist, radical rhetoric or those offering a sense of protection," said INSCOP Research director Remus Stefureac.
The 5th edition of the Informat.ro - INSCOP Research Barometer was conducted from 25 October to 2 November in urban and rural areas, surveying 3,000 respondents (compared with the usual 1,100), who answered just two questions (the country's direction and voting intention for political parties). The sample was simple, stratified, and representative across significant socio-demographic categories (sex, age, occupation) for Romania's non-institutionalised population aged 18 and over. The maximum margin of error is ą1.8%, with a 95% confidence level.
The survey was commissioned by the news platform Informat.ro in partnership with the think-tank Strategic Thinking Group.
