At a meeting on Thursday with ambassador of the Swiss Confederation in Bucharest Massimo Baggi, Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu highlighted the positive bilateral cooperation on home affairs, with an emphasis on police and emergency situation cooperation.

"Minister Catalin Predoiu highlighted the important role of the projects and actions carried out under the aegis of the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Program in developing national capacities for the fight of organized crime, which implicitly contribute to improving national and European security. The Romanian IntMin also mentioned the commitment of the Ministry of the Interior to combating organized crime in all its forms, with an emphasis on human and drug trafficking," the Ministry of the Interior said in a release on Thursday.

Regarding emergency situations and civil protection, the participants mentioned the need to develop the states' capacity to manage natural disasters and large-scale unforeseen events, and agreed to speed up the exchange of best practices and expertise in the field, as well as to support initiatives of joint interest across Europe.

"The Swiss ambassador in Bucharest expressed appreciation for the very good level of the bilateral cooperation relationship, as well as for the existence of the necessary prerequisites to further develop it. In this thread, he mentioned the importance of continuing the projects currently in progress, including in the perspective of reinforcing the initiatives that have proven successful," the cited source shows.

As regards topics of European interest, the two officials underscored that preventing and combating illegal migration is among the states' top priorities, and that dealing with this phenomenon requires coordinated action at national and European level that takes into account existing realities.

IntMin Predoiu mentioned that Romania remains firmly committed to fighting cross-border crime and reducing illegal migration, as the set of measures adopted both before and after its full Schengen entry was successfully directed to this effect.

The sides stressed the importance of Europe-wide cooperation and cohesion, especially in the current context marked by major security challenges, the radicalization of public rhetoric and the use of emerging technologies to destabilize democratic processes.
