The Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, stated on Tuesday that he had discussed with representatives of several institutions about Romania's integration into the international energy market and specified that "good news" regarding an institutional rapprochement between the IEA and Romania could be announced in the coming period.

When I think of Romania, the first thing that comes to mind is Hagi. I have been a football fan all my life, and Hagi and Popescu are my heroes from my youth. Today I had meetings with the country's president, the country's prime minister and the minister of energy. We discussed the opportunities. What we discussed was how Romania can get closer to the international energy market. I hope that soon we will be able to share some good news related to the IEA and Romania in the idea that it will be closer institutionally. This would be the good news for today, Fatih Birol said at the Delphi Economic Forum.

Asked about the challenges in the coming period, he stated that energy security ranks first among "governments' headaches."

The IEA executive director also stated that the definition of energy security is changing. In the past we were referring to oil and gas and there are still issues on the agenda, but in addition to traditional risks come new ones, such as electricity security, Birol stressed.

In his opinion, "we are entering the era of electricity", as economies are increasingly electrified, as are the transport sector and households.

Regarding the nuclear energy sector, the IEA representative warned that Europe made "a monumental mistake" when it turned its back on this type of energy. However, Romania was highlighted as one of the few countries that did not take decisions to reduce its nuclear energy capacities.

As to natural gas, Fatih Birol stated that starting with 2026 there will be huge volumes on the market coming from the USA, Canada, Australia or Qatar. This significant increase in supply will lead to lower prices and, implicitly, increased competitiveness.

It is very important to note that Romania must make the most of Neptun Deep. In practice, the production must be used to generate electricity or to export, but in any case, the analyses carried out show that the production from Neptun Deep will provide the Romanian economy with another 2 billion euros per year in added value, said the executive director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol.

He was present on Tuesday at the first edition of the Delphi Economic Forum, held for the first time in Bucharest. The Delphi Economic Forum is one of the most influential European platforms dedicated to strategic dialogue and regional cooperation. The event brought together leaders from the political, economic, academic and civil society sectors, at a time when Central and South-Eastern Europe is playing an increasingly important role in shaping the European agenda on security, sustainability and competitiveness.
